About Kompong Cham
Kompong Cham is a sleepy town on the Mekong River approximately 130 kilometres from Phnom Penh. It has a handful of basic hotels, a couple of western restaurants/bars and is certainly not the place for party animals. What it does have is the only bridge in Cambodia that crosses the Mekong River. It is on the road from Laos (and the Freshwater Dolphin sanctuary that is Kratie) to Phnom Penh and Siem Reip If you insist your hotel room is 5 star, than sorry, this can't be done. Your hotel room will be the best available in Kompong Cham. You will have an air/con room, cable TV, a hot water shower in your bathroom, and a view of the Mekong River. You won't have a swimming pool, nor will you have room service.
You may meet a few backpackers and other tourists who spend the night in Kompong Cham as a stop over, you may meet the odd (sometimes very odd) Phnom Penh expatriate, who just needs to get out of the city for a night. You will however, love Kompong Cham for its beautiful scenery, laid back attitude and extremely friendly local people.
About Kratie and Stung Treng
Kratie , pronounced kra-chay, is well known as the last place in Cambodia to see the famous but critically endangered irrawaddy freshwater Dolphins. Kratie is a picturesque town overlooking the Mekong River. Stung Treng is also a town on the Mekong River that is soon to have Cambodia's second bridge over the Mekong. As late as February, 2007 the road between these towns was still under construction i.e. dusty. Now that the road is finished it's possibly the easiest and quickest road to ride in Cambodia, but that may be changing soon. The bridge is getting near completion and that will link Vientiane, Laos to Phnom Penh by sealed road for the first time. Both places have decent but simple hotels similar to Kompong Cham. With tourism taking off in both places have new hotels and guesthouses continually opening. The places we stay will be the best available in both towns, like Kompong Cham they won't be 5 star, but they will be the best in town - clean, have air conditioning, hot water and cable TV.
About Siem Reip
Seim Reip (with the exception of war damaged cities), must be the most changed city in the world over the past decade. My first trip to the amazing temples of Angkor was in January 2000. I can show photos from inside Ankor Wat that are amazing. Not amazing because of my photographic skills, but amazing as we had the place to ourselves apart from two other backpackers, a handful of Khmer kids and a few monks. Nowadays, things have changed, tourists flock there. 5 star hotels have shot up everywhere, but one thing has not changed, that is the splendor that is the temples of Angkor, especially Angkor Wat. Sadly, in my honest opinion, far too many tourists fly to Siem Reip, spend a day, maybe two at the temples then fly out of Cambodia. They miss so much of the real Cambodian experience.
About Battambang
When you arrive in this sleepy riverside city it's hard to imagine this is Cambodia's second biggest city. It is situated on the banks of the Sangker river, and just south west of the Tone Sap Lakes. It's often overlooked on the tourist trail but its well worth a look. It's popular as a stopover by tourists traveling from Phnom Penh to Bangkok.
About Sihanouk Ville
Sihanouk Ville is also known as Kompong Som. It was a quiet coastal town a few years ago, not so any more. There is said to have more bars and more hotel rooms than Phnom Penh. Virtually any nationality of restaurant is available. It now has 2 five star hotel/resorts, but most importantly it has many beautiful beaches.
About Kampot
Kampot is a quiet river town just inland from the coast. It now boasts one of Cambodia's best known exports: "Kampot Pepper." Kampot has a few bars/restaurants, some delightful small riverside hotels, and as always friendly local people. It is beginning to grow steadily as tourism increases. Also a few westerners are finding this a place to retire to, or just a quiet place outside of the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh and Sihanouk Ville.
About Krung Kep
Kep as it is known, was once Cambodia's premier beach resort. Decades of civil war and the Khmer Rouge left Kep in ruins. Today Kep is rapidly returning to past glories. The nice hotels are back, the famous seafood restaurants are back. Kep is definitely awakening from its long slumber.
Day 1.
Meals that are supplied:Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
You will be picked up from your hotel around 8am and driven to the Hog House in Takmao, approximately 12kms from the centre of Phnom Penh. Here there is a free basic breakfast if required. After all paperwork etc. is completed we head off on Highway 1 towards Vietnam. First stop is Neak Leoung. At Neak Leoung we cross the Mekong by Ferry and continue onto Prey Veng for lunch. After lunch we continue onto Kompong Cham. That night we'll head off to a Khmer restaurant across the Mekong River. To finish the day a few drinks at either Joe's Mekong River Crossing or maybe Simon's Mekong Daze. These are the only 2 places in Kompong Cham where you can be guaranteed ice cold drinks.
Day 2
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
We meet for breakfast at Joe's Mekong Crossing around 8am. After breakfast we checkout and head off again. We travel North East towards Kratie where we stop for lunch. After Lunch we continue North to Strung Treng where we stay for the evening. Once in Stung Treng you're welcome to explore the township and surrounding area The bridge may or may not be open, but after the 2nd longest day in saddle for the tour, a quiet night with a meal on a riverside restaurant will probably be the order of the day.
Day 3.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
We meet for breakfast and after checkout we head back to Kratie. We check into our hotel, have lunch, then travel the short distance out of town to the freshwater dolphin sanctuary. After we return to Kratie we'll have a quiet evening. Kratie does have a couple of established western run bars and restaurants so a pleasant evening is guaranteed with a meal at The Red Sun Rising. Tomorrow is day 4, the longest day's ride of the tour. With over 450kms to travel an early night is probably the smart move here.
Day 4.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
We meet for breakfast at the Red Sun Rising around 7am. We try to be on the road at 8am. Lunch today will be back at the Mekong Crossing in Kompong Cham. After lunch we continue onto Kompong Thom for a snack and a cold drink. After our break we continue on to the town of Siem Reip Here we book into the 4 star Angkor Hotel. That night we'll head off to a Khmer restaurant for dinner and a few drinks (if you have the energy). After dinner an optional few more drinks at a few of the bars around town, then off to bed.
Day 5.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast and Dinner.
We will depart our hotel for the Temples of Angkor at first light. Unfortunately only specially licensed bikes and cars are permitted inside the temple complex, Our Harleys definitely do not qualify although we may be able to sneak in a back way after 5 pm if you desire. We will therefore decide whether to travel by motorbike taxi or car. Either way these costs are borne by HTC. That evening, after a swim in the pool we will enjoy a meal at the hotel. If you still have enough energy in you, the rest of the night is yours to enjoy the nightlife of Seim Reip.
Day 6.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast.
Day 6 is a day of two choices. You can head back to the Temples or take a ride around Siem Reip to see the other sights of this, Cambodia's most modern city. Perhaps there is even a third choice! A day by the pool and maybe even a massage by the hotel's in house massage service. The choice is yours.
Day 7.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 7 we leave Siem Reip for the much more leisurely pace of Battambang. Battambang is across the Tonle Sap lake. From when we leave Kompong Cham on day 5 till we reach Phnom Penh we are virtually doing a loop around the great lakes.
One problem we may encounter here is the road from Siem Reip to Sisophon. If it is not fit for a Harley to travel we shall travel back to Phnom Penh. Should we not travel to Battambang you will have the choice of a refund, or an extra night and trip to Koh Kong, on The Thai border, later in the tour. This decision will be made well before our trip begins. If we travel to Battambang, lunch will be in Sisopon.
Day 8.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 8 we leave Battambang (or Siem Reip, which will make it day 7) for the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh. We will stop for lunch in Kompong Chanang. Once in Phnom Penh we will book into the Billabong Hotel. The evening is yours to relax by the pool or check out some of Phnom Penh's notorious nightlife. Your tour guide will certainly be able to point you in the right directions.
Day 9.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
On day 10 we will wait till rush hour is over and then leave Phnom Penh. We travel out of Phnom Penh and through the countryside to Takeo. Here we stop for a short drinks break in the centre of Takeo town. From Takeo we continue onto Kampot. Here we book into our hotel. Here you have a choice of two hotels, The historical Bokor Mountain Lodge with (6)rooms upstairs and bar/restaurant downstairs or the more modern Rikitikitavi with (4)rooms downstairs and bar/ restaurant upstairs. Both are small so we may end up occupying both. Don't worry about location as they are both on the riverside and approximately 25 metres apart. That night we'll head off to a Khmer restaurant on the river for dinner and a few drinks. After dinner perhaps a few drinks at a few of the bars in Kampot such as the Rusty Keyhole (a personal favorite of mine) then off to bed.
Day 10.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast and Dinner
We depart Kampot around 10am after breakfast at the Rusty Keyhole bar and restaurant. We travel relatively quiet roads until we reach Route 4. Route 4 is the shortest route from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk Ville and be warned, it can get quite hectic. Just before Sihanouk Ville we will stop off at the K'bal Chhay waterfalls. The waterfalls are about 10 kms off the road along a dirt track. In the wet season we may organize our escort vehicle to bring us back later as the road may be quite muddy. We then travel into Sihanouk Ville where we check into the Reef Resort. From here you are free to relax by the pool or walk to the nearby beaches. That night we will head to Treasure Island, a Khmer seafood restaurant on a deserted beach. Then the rest of the night is yours to enjoy the nightlife that is Sihanouk Ville.
Day 11.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast
Day 3 is a lazy day indeed. You may like to just relax on the beach. You need not even leave the Reef Resort, perhaps a day by the pool. If you're a bit more energetic your guide will be more than happy to show you around Sihanouk Ville or even organize an excursion to Strung Hav, a small fishing village 30 kms from town. Strung Hav is famous among local expats for its simple but tasty seafood restaurant. Once again the road is dirt and in the wet season it's not the place to take a Harley, still your guide can organize another way to get there if you desire. Be it a trail bike or in our escort vehicle. You're also free to explore the area and its fine beaches.
Day 12.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 4 we leave Sihanouk Ville but never fear, we are not leaving Cambodia's beaches just yet. We depart the Reef Resort after breakfast and travel back to Kampot. After a drinks break in Kampot we travel the short distance to Krung Kep. In Kampot we decide whether to have lunch at Kristian's Rusty Keyhole (where the BBQ ribs are famous throughout the Kingdom) or, after a drink, we travel to Kep for seafood (where the seafood is famous throughout the Kingdom) Kep was once the darling of elite Cambodians before Sihanouk Ville became Cambodia's number one beach destination. In Kep we check into the Beach House, a splendid hotel, set in the hills overlooking the ocean. Here you can enjoy the pool or walk down to the beach. That night we will visit a Khmer seafood restaurant. There are getting to be more drinking establishments in Kep, but maybe a swim or quiet beer back at the Beach House is the best way to finish our last night before Phnom Penh.
Day 13.
Meals that are supplied: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (a BBQ).
On day 5 we are in no hurry to travel the 150 odd kilometres back to the Hog House. Maybe an early breakfast followed by an hour or two on the beach. We'll check out around noon, then have lunch at another Khmer seafood restaurant. After lunch we begin the final leg of our tour. We'll arrive back at the Hog House in Takmau well before dark. There we'll have a few drinks, a swim and a BBQ before you are delivered back to your hotel that evening in Phnom Penh.
The only thing not included in this price is the meals not listed and your drinks.
Cost of the Whole Hog Cambodian Tour is $3350.
